RAGTIME CLASS AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER’S SWING UNIVERSITY
Terry will be teaching a course on ragtime at Jazz At Lincoln Center in Spring of 2009. The class will be held every Wednesday from March 25 through May 20, 2009, except for April 8th. The hours are 6:30p-8:30p at Rose Hall, in the Time Warner Center. The classroom will be in the Irene Diamond Education Center that is towards the north on the 5th (main) floor. The class will present all the various styles of ragtime, stride and early jazz piano in live performance and include rare films, discussions of the history and practical lessons in playing the music.
As the direct connection to the old masters such as Eubie Blake, Terry is able to illuminate the roots of jazz that are generally not presented in contemporary jazz programs. He has taught musical theater at jazz history and musical theater at Denison University and Queens Theater. He has also conducted seminars at Ohio State, Yale, Oberlin, Princeton among many others. He will be teaching Musical Theater at the Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School in Steamboat Springs, Colorado on June 18-July 5, 2008. HYPERLINK
SCHOOL PERFORMANCES – ELEMENTARY THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL
Terry has performed hundreds of programs for students at all levels. These shows are always fun and informative, illustrating America's great musical inventions--ragtime, blues and jazz (1 to 8 musicians). Terry also works with school musical groups. He provides arrangements from his collection for the concert or jazz bands to perform with him.
IT'S A GRAND OLD VAUDEVILLE SHOW
Developed by Rebecca Ogden & Terry Waldo
IT'S A GRAND OLD VAUDEVILLE SHOW is a multi-media package designed to enable anyone to produce his or her own live vaudeville show. The package is appropriate for elementary and middle-school students, as well as adult groups.
The instructional materials allow students of varying levels of musical and dramatic skills to perform vaudeville songs, dances, skits and variety acts.
The package includes:
- MUSIC LEAD SHEETS AND SCORE
- COMPACT DISC
(with and without vocals for practice and performance)
- DANCE INSTRUCTION VIDEO
(with complete choreography and dancesteps of the era)
- EDUCATIONAL BOOKLET.
These materials introduce the student to early Twentieth Century music and classic American vaudeville and to some of America's greatest songwriters and performers like Bert Williams, Irving Berlin, Fanny Brice and George M. Cohan.
Terry and a group of New York's finest musicians have recorded the musical accompaniment for the show. The skits and jokes were provided by theater historian and writer Ralph Allen, whose works include the very popular Broadway musical comedy, SUGAR BABIES. And the dance video was created by some of NY's finest historical dance performers and choreographers.
Terry and other performers are available as artists-in-residence to direct and perform in student productions.
